Ergonomic Chair Analysis and Redesign

Objective
Each student was supposed to individually choose an existing ergonomic office chair, evaluate its ergonomic success, and create an improved design.
Skills, Software, and Applied Knowledge
- Working knowledge of ergonomics
- Ability to decipher anthropomorphic data and accommodate a wide range of the population (with purchasing power)
Process
References
Based on knowledge gained from lectures, research into ergonomics, and anthropometric values found in the Gordon 2012 ANUSRII standards, I analyzed and redesigned the Modway Ergonomic Chair.
Original Design Anthropomorphic Analysis

Sex | Anthropomorphic Range Accommodated |
|---|---|
Male | 2nd + |
Female | 40th + |
Redesign and Comparison

Notes
- Bolded arrows denote adjustable features.
- The shaded region is an embedded lumbar support cushion.
- Seat width = 20 inches
- A = Spans 13.5" - 20"
- B = Spans 20.5" - 25.5" (if A is 13.5")
Feature | Redesign | Original Design |
|---|---|---|
Seat Height Range | 13.5" to 20" | 15" to 19.5" |
Seat Depth | Adjustable seat depth | 20 inches, non-adjustable |
Seat Width | 20" | 19" |
Headrest | Not included in design | None available in design or as an add-on |
Lumbar Support | Adjustable support embedded in chair | Stationary, non-adjustable |
Armrests | Adjustable up and down (7" variability), from side to side, and forwards and backwards | No rotation or movement capabilities |
Comments
The previous chair largely neglected the female population's anthropometry. Greater variability in adjustability and the addition of some new features will drastically improve this product's ergonomic potential.
